Since its inception, the IIW established international groups of specialists (Commissions) to collectively study the scientific phenomena related to welding and allied processes, the various ways in which they could be applied more efficiently in the industrial context and the avenues through which the information collected could be best communicated. The considerable work achieved by these Commissions, under the coordination of the Technical Management Board (TMB), is considered an invaluable source of technical information for engineers the world over.
