 The Arthur Smith Award

This Award honours the memory of Dr. Arthur Smith who was the United Kingdom's Delegate to Commission XII (then called "Fluxes and Gas-Shielded Electrical Welding Processes"), serving as its Chair from 1980-1986. He was a pioneer of CO2-shielded arc welding of steel in the late 1950s and made technical contributions to the work of Commission XII. In addition, Dr. Smith's indefatigable energy and enthusiasm for all IIW activities were evident to all who knew him and he contributed immensely to the international spirit of the organization and to the furtherance of its aims.

The Arthur Smith Award consists of an engraved silver plate which is presented by the United Kingdom Delegation.

 Purpose and eligibility


The Arthur Smith Award is conferred annually to an individual who has given dedicated service to the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and enabled the considerable advancement of its objectives. The prizewinner is usually an individual who has contributed to IIW activities for numerous years, particularly in the work of the Technical Commissions.
