 The Evgeny Paton Prize

 

The prizewinner receives a commemorative medal and a diploma and the opportunity to visit the E.O. Paton Welding Institute in Kiev, Ukraine.
This Award pays tribute to the lifetime contributions of Evgeny Oskarevich Paton to the fields of welding and joining. A graduate in Civil Engineering, he specialized in bridge construction, an activity in which he was continuously involved for a period of 35 years. At the age of 59, he realized the advantages offered by arc welding in bridge fabrication. He founded the first welding laboratory in Kiev, later to become the world-famous Electric Welding Institute and now named after him. His aim was to automate arc welding and in this regard, he played a major role in the development of submerged arc welding.
Throughout his career, Evgeny Paton also maintained a profound interest in education and training.

 Purpose and criteria

The Evgeny Paton Prize is awarded annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to science and technology through his/her lifetime dedication to applied research and development in the field of Advanced Technologies, Materials and Equipment for welding and allied processes.
Sponsored by the National Welding Committee of the Ukraine and the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, the Prize is awarded in two (2) possible categories:
Odd years - Category A: For applied research and development which have been successfully utilized in different industries and new spheres of human endeavours.
Even years - Category B: For the development of new industrial equipment, materials and structures using welding and allied processes, which have been successfully implemented by industry.

Nominations are considered by a panel of judges comprising TMB Members and a representative of the National Welding Committee of the Ukraine and the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute. The panel of judges is chaired by the TMB Chair. The judges’ decision is endorsed by the IIW Board of Directors.
